On Wednesday, August 27th, after an ultrasound and CT Scan in Bryan, Ohio we were told that Eric had an abdominal mass. We found ourselves at the Cleveland Clinic the following day meeting with a surgeon who confirmed the mass in the left kidney area of the abdomen. Returning to Cleveland on September 3rd and 4th, more testing was done to understand how far it had advanced. After a consultation with another doctor, we were relieved to know that the cancer had not spread to the brain, chest, bone or lungs. For this reason, we have hope for healing.
Eric and Gwen will be leaving for Cleveland Clinic again on Sunday, September 7th. Consultations and more testing is scheduled Monday in preparation for surgery on Tuesday, September 8th.
The journey ahead is a long one but we know the healing power of The Great Physician. We also know that Eric is at the best place he can be with the most competent doctors and care givers. The love and support of family and friends is unbelievable and we thank God for so many that are praying for Eric and our family.
As we continue on this journey, we will communicate through this blog. At this time, please pray for strength for Eric as he faces a major surgery. The recovery will be a long one but we have hope and we feel the strength of so many prayers.
Until next time...

Dear Eric, Gwen, Emily and Adam,
As you go on your way, may God go with you.
May he go before you to show you the way.
May he go behind you to encourage you,
Beside you to befriend you, above you to watch over.
Within you to give you peace!
I will be continually praying for all of you! I am praying for strength, for the doctors and all the caretakers, for healing, and for peace. I know there are long days ahead. Hang on to the hands of each other and God! God will lead you every step of the way!

"Never underestimate my Jesus,
You're telling me that there's no hope,
I'm telling you you're wrong,
Never underestimatey my Jesus
When the world around you crumbles,
He will be strong, He will be strong..."
-from "For The Moments I Feel Faint" by Reliant K
Oh Lord, you never let go, through the clouds and through the storm, Oh Lord, you never let go, in every high and every low.... Lord you never let go of me.
He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters." Psalm 18:16.
Eric, Gwen and kids: God will hold your right hand through this; we will all hold your left. And if you need more, just ask. I hope you can find comfort in feeling the prayers surrounding you, like we have before.
Heidi, John, Amelia and Jessica Kern

Eric, Gwen, Emily and Adam,
You are in our continuous thoughts and prayers.
We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character hope. And hope does not dissapoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
Romans 5:3
