There are those "coincidences" in our lives that we know happen because God is directing the ways of his people. Yesterday Eric received a phone call from his surgeon. For the past 2 weeks, Eric has thought often about sending him an e-mail. He was so good to us in September and we so much respect him as a doctor and as a person. When we go to Cleveland, we no longer see him because we are always in the Oncology Department and his office is in the Urology Building. I may have said in previous postings that he prayed with Eric before surgery and then again with both of us after we heard the pathology reports. Before Eric was discharged from the hospital, our last visit with him was the day before that. Many of you know that Eric was making wooden pocket crosses by hand and you may be carrying one in your pocket today. I happened to have an extra one with me in Cleveland so we decided that Eric should give this cross his doctor and although it seemed a little awkward, we felt that it was appropriate. Trying to stay professional, he took it, thanked Eric and put it into the pocket of his white doctor's coat. Even during the follow-up visit a few weeks later, there was no mention of the cross and we never really knew for sure if he was carrying it with him.
When Eric talked with the doctor yesterday, he thanked him again for saving his life with the surgery. He told Eric that he thinks of him often wondering how he is doing. He said that when he reaches into the pocket of his doctor's coat during the day, he feels the cross that Eric gave him and he thinks of him. That cross moved him to call Eric yesterday when Eric needed it most. That cross is the symbol of God's presence in all of this. That cross is a reminder of God's love. That cross is for all of us as believers to hold onto in our pocket each day and it gives us hope.
We anxiously wait for our trip to Cleveland on Friday. The doctor has agreed to meet with us again either this Friday or next Friday when Eric goes for his first treatment. One person can make such a difference especially when you know that they believe and carry the cross with them each day.
Peace and love to all... Eric and Gwen
